Commercial buildings remain inefficient

Most commercial buildings remain energy inefficient (BPIE). For example, London’s commercial buildings still used 84% of their energy consumption despite being totally empty during COVID19 lockdown (Carbon_Intelligence). The principal reason for this inefficiency is the interoperability complexities between disparate Building Automation technologies, which currently operate in domain-silos, using non-IP (Internet Protocol) solutions.

The solution to inefficient buildings

Cascoda has pioneered the digital transformation of Building Management Systems (BMS), by working with the KNX Association (KNX). The KNX standard has a ~40% global market share in the building automation market. KNX contracted Cascoda to write the software stack for its new KNX IoT IP-based automation standard, which works cross-domain and with existing (non-IP) KNX infrastructure.
Cascoda’s competitive advantage is that it is the first company to have implemented KNX IoT into its products. Cascoda’s products with KNX IoT enable high-performance, interoperable BMS, which is urgently needed to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

Why don't other solutions work

Other solutions struggle with the complexity of sharing information across domain silos (e.g. heating/air-conditioning, lighting, occupancy, fire systems, etc.). This leads limited energy efficiency as BMS are generally unable to use occupancy information to dynamically turn down heating or air-conditioning in unoccupied areas. Other advantages are a reduction in installation cost, as with KNX IoT the building’s IT infrastructure carries the data, rather than dedicated wiring. Further advantages include minimising the cost of complex cross-domain system configuration, and reducing vendor lock-in.

Since KNX IoT is purely IP-based, it overcomes the above issues, as the problem of interoperability between domains becomes a software translation only, rather than one of software and hardware incompatibility. Cascoda’s product is in full production, and is certified to the Thread wireless IoT network-layer standard. KNX IoT certification will follow as soon as it becomes avaliable.
